Doctor Faustus

For the What You Will Shakespeare Company
January–March 2016

Doctor Faustus is a play by Christopher Marlowe, following the story of a man who sells his soul to the Devil to sate his lust for knowledge. What You Will Shakespeare wanted to produce a darker interpretation of the text that explores Hell as being sundered from one’s identity and the crises of identity and morality in the two characters of Faustus and Mephistopheles.

The pair feature prominently in this poster, which emphasizes the themes of identity and choice. Faustus is on the precipice of a major decision, flanked by Mephistopheles on the left and Lucifer’s shadow on the right, which threatens to subsume Faustus’s soul.

The logo work was done with ink and a brush. Watercolor/ink splats and streaks were created and scanned for the project. A bright red color was settled upon to evoke blood and pop out when on display on bulletin boards.
